A Avenida Rio Branco chamava-se em 1819 Rua General Rafael Pinto Bandeira e possuía apenas 3 ou 4 quadras. Em 1876, o nome da rua foi mudado para Coronel Valença. Em 1898 chamava-se Progresso. A atual denominação surgiu somente em 7 de outubro de 1908.
