Na década de 1920 Santa Maria viu surgir prédios com uma arquitetura arrojada, como foi o caso do prédio que abrigou por muito tempo a Sociedade União dos Caixeiros Viajantes (SUCV), o primeiro a ter elevador. O prédio foi inaugurado em 20 de setembro de 1926.
